Hello there. I know that most of my neighbors are dodging snow storms on the East Coast. And I feel sorry for you, I do. But, it’s strawberry season here in Israel and I just can’t resist sharing some pictures from the shuk (market).
After a traditional Israeli breakfast — shakshuka, salad, and labne — on X-mas morning…
… I headed to Mahene Yehuda on Friday afternoon and was overwhelmed by the rows and rows and piles and piles of strawberries. Deep red, huge, and just oozing with juices. But for anyone who has never been to Mahane Yehuda, let me just tell you that it’s a zoo before shabbat. So much so that while I was able to snag a big bowl of berries, I didn’t dare snap a picture for fear of being overrun by the more serious shoppers. Luckily, a few days later at Shuk HaCarmel in Tel Aviv, I was able to grab a few more berries and get some pictures.
Isn’t travel great?
what a great picture! Still perfect weather in Israel which is far from perfect- we need rain! I really need to visit Mahane Yehuda in Jerusalem, perhaps I can plan a trip with Miriam as that’s her favorite shuk in the whole world.
One of the things I love about Israel is that, as opposed to in America where you can get any produce at any time of the year, here you really feel the seasons. They actually matter! Great pics. I love shakshuka, and those strawberries look absolutely luscious!
Sorry I missed seeing you a second time during your trip, but glad we got to at least have a burger together! Hope you had fun the rest of the time!
Sarah – Definitely go with Mahane Yehuda — it’s an experience and more fun with someone who knows the different vendors. According to my friend who is a Jerusalem native for life, everyone has their favorite guy for bread, nuts, olives, etc.
Joel – I totally hear you on the seasonality of produce in Israel — when it’s in season, its amazing! And you really treasure each of the seasons. Glad you introduced me to Burger Bar — the first hamburger I have had in over a year.
Yes, I love Mahane Yehudah. I used to go through there every evening on the way home from work. It’s changed since then but I still love it.
And those strawberries…honest, such a gorgeous photo. Gotta run out and get some strawberries – right now!
